Welcome to Sea Otter Boats, the world’s finest builders of marine grade aluminium alloy boats. By visiting our website, we hope that you will start to explore the many great benefits that owning a Sea Otter Boat can provide. Sea Otter are based in Staveley, Derbyshire and are renowned for their high quality alloy boats and excellent customer care. The craft that Sea Otter build consist of: narrowboats, cruisers, Dutch barges, houseboats, and workboats.

Sea Otter craft are constructed in modern and fully enclosed purpose-built workshops. The premises, built in the year 2000 and 2003, are equipped to the highest standards enabling our skilled workforce to provide vessels of the quality build and finish which today's buyer expects and deserves.

Located near the M1 motorway in Derbyshire, this allows us great accessibility and transport links (see 'How To Find Us'). Combine this with our fine premises and our outstanding customer care and it is very easy to see why we have now been labelled as one of the market leaders in the construction of luxury boats.

It's unwise to pay too much, but it's unwise to pay too little too. When you pay too much, you lose a little money.....that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.

The Common Law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot...it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.

Aluminium

All of the Sea Otter craft are constructed using marine grade aluminium alloy. This is the very same alloy that is used to build sea-going RNLI vessels, fast ferries and trawlers.

Marine grade aluminium alloy has a proven lifespan of over 100 years. It is extremely resistant to corrosion, strong and very durable. This ensures boats that are made out of such an alloy are more than a match for the rigors of the inland waterways and sea-going cruising. As well as these features, aluminium provides a natural defence against corrosion. This is because of the natural reaction that takes place between the aluminium and air. An aluminium oxide is formed which protects our boats against the sort of corrosion that plagues steel boats.

Owning your own Sea Otter boat ensures you will enjoy hours doing what you enjoy rather than spending painstaking hours and hard work on hull maintenance.

To learn more about why aluminium should be the choice for your boat, please visit our ‘Why Aluminium?’ page where more in-depth information is provided.

Technology And Tradition

You might be led to believe that simply owning a Sea Otter boat would bring you all the benefits your heart could desire. This is totally wrong as the benefits and pleasure of owning a Sea Otter boat go far further than the high quality of the materials and the construction techniques used in building a boat.

Buying a Sea Otter boat translates into buying into the future. By this we mean that by applying our considerable skills and experience gained in building our high quality sea-going vessels, we have, over the years, designed and developed revolutionary craft. Our innovative underwater shape and Ballast System© provide superb stability and handling characteristics on canal, river and sea. The manoeuvrability and stopping power of your Sea Otter boat will give you instant confidence whatever your level of experience.

When buying a Sea Otter boat, you can be assured that you are buying a boat combining modern day technology and materials to provide you with an unrivalled boating experience.

Cabin Interiors

Luxury, comfort, quality, easy cleaning and durability are uppermost in our minds when we fit the interior of your Sea Otter boat. We believe in total customer satisfaction and so are happy to let you personalise the interior of your boat as much as possible as well as offering standard layout options if desired. Carpets, upholstery and curtains are included as standard and we provide you with a fantastic choice of colours and designs.

A wide range of factory fitted options and accessories provide great scope as to what can be included in your Sea Otter boat. To ensure year-round cruising, all of our cabins are insulated for maximum comfort and finished in high-quality, hardwood-faced ply. We custom build all our interior furnishings using the finest ash and hardwood capping finish. A comprehensively fitted galley, bathroom with full shower, hand-basin and toilet complete the domestic facilities.

Commissioning

Our skilled workforce individually handcrafts each and every Sea Otter boat. This allows us to provide you with the opportunity to select from a choice of tried and tested layouts included in the Sea Otter standard price range. Craft can be finished at any stage of construction. This can range from a bare hull to a fully fitted boat. We try to accommodate any individual preferences.

After Sales Service

Here at Sea Otter, we are firm believers in quality after-sales service. We understand the needs and concerns of our customers and have established an enviable reputation as providers of a professional and personal after sales service. If you need convincing about the quality of the service we offer then just speak to any member of the Sea Otter Owner’s Club.

Why Choose Sea Otter?

If you still need convincing, here are the main reasons why a Sea Otter boat is the boat for you.

  • Sea Otters require minimal maintenance. The marine grade aluminium alloy is virtually resistant to corrosion with the hull having a projected lifespan in excess of 100 years. As well as this, unlike steel boats, our boat bottoms do not require frequent and expensive re-blacking.

  • Superior quality interiors. Sea Otter boats have luxurious hardwood faced units and provide a choice of fine range interior carpets and soft furnishings.

  • Great after sales care. Sea Otter owners enjoy events and experiences, and exchange information and ideas about all things waterway related. The Sea Otter Owner’s Club provides for a close and happy relationship between the boat building team at Sea Otter and the owners of Sea Otter craft. We enjoy a close correspondence with our owner’s club and appreciate their enthusiastic response, which we feel is a great reflection of the quality of our after sales service.

  • Sea Otter boats are environmentally friendly. The v-shaped hull on our boats dramatically reduces bank erosion and habitat disturbance as well as reducing fuel consumption. Re-blacking of Sea Otter boats is not required which ensures there are less harmful chemicals mixing with the water.
  • If you have any further questions, either contact us or check out our frequently asked questions page to see if your question and answer is there.
