Owners Of Sea Otter 56' Narrowboat Myfanwy

Following the London Boat Show in January 2004, we visited Walton Marine and, on an impulse, ordered a Sea Otter 51 on 21st January for completion in October. After going away and thinking about it a bit we called up Lee and added four feet but then Sea Otter added another foot during manufacture and the project ended up as ‘Myfanwy’ the 56 ft. Sea Otter.

Our first sighting was at Staveley in August at the Sea Otter factory.

By October we’ve chosen the fabrics for furnishings, the hull colour and been asked for decisions on all manner of odds and ends. Then Myfanwy arrives and is launched at Shepperton and captain Lee Gibbons puts her through her paces.

By the following April it was time to set off for our first proper trip; 300 miles around the Thames ring.

We started off down the Grand Union as the countryside turns green with Spring, and then up a threatening Thames, to a quick U-turn at Lechlade leaving the entrance to the Thames & Severn canal behind before returning home via a more peaceful Oxford canal.

Charlie, our cat, has settled in perfectly to his new home which means if it’s good enough for him, then Ray and the crew at Sea Otter in Staveley will just have to let us keep Myfanwy but it’s comforting to know that they’re on the end of the phone anytime there’s a problem.
